The Good Life

Nebraska expatriates maintain a soft spot in their hearts for the Cornhusker State and all (well, most) that it represents.  Let's take a trip back home together.  Compare these features with Northern California.

Arbor Lodge is the main attraction of Nebraska City, down in the southeast corner of the state.  J. Sterling Morton was an early Nebraska settler, politician, business man and one-time Secretary of the Interior.  He was a world traveler and brought tree seedlings from all over the world to plant on his estate.  Arbor Day was one of his ideas.  His son also got into the salt business.

Homestead Nat’l Monument is near Beatrice and is the site of the first homestead taken out on January 1, 1862 by Daniel Freeman.

Out in Minden is a long-time attraction, Pioneer Village.  Many of us visited this site as part of a school field trip.  Remember?

Way out west from Lincoln, well on the way to California, is Scotts Bluff National Monument.

Henry Doorly Zoo is back east in Omaha.  Doorly Zoo is truly a Cornhusker State treasure.

The Strategic Air Command (now renamed) is headquartered at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue.  The SAC Museum recently moved from Bellevue to a site on the Platte River between Lincoln and Omaha.

Bertrand Museum, Missouri Valley, Iowa

Though not exactly in Nebraska, the Bertrand Museum is just across the Missouri River in Iowa at Desoto Bend.  The river has exchanged real estate between Nebraska and Iowa over and over again so it's likely the Bertrand site was once in Nebraska and may well be there again.
